Journée d’études organisée par l’IREMAM / Stéphane Cermakian, et le LA3M / Patrick Donabédian,

L’Artsakh, nom arménien du Haut-Karabagh, peuplé principalement par les Arméniens depuis la plus haute Antiquité, recèle des trésors architecturaux sur l’ensemble de ce territoire montagneux. Or, depuis la guerre totale menée par l’Azerbaïdjan contre les Arméniens de la région en 2020 jusqu’à l’attaque de grande ampleur des 19-20 septembre 2023, suivie de l’exode de la totalité de la population (120.000 personnes), non seulement le monde politique assiste – sans action décisive – à une épuration ethnique de grande ampleur, mais c’est aussi tout ce patrimoine multimillénaire qui est menacé. Les enjeux dépassent largement le Caucase du sud et s’inscrivent dans un ensemble de tensions croissantes et d’alliances géopolitiques ayant des conséquences sur l’ensemble du monde civilisé. Lors de cette journée d’étude, nous proposerons de nous pencher sur l’histoire du conflit du Haut-Karabagh, sur les enjeux politiques dans le Caucase, et sur le riche patrimoine architectural de la région et son devenir.

Fighting Windmills – The Armenian Cultural Heritage of Artsakh and its Protection

The uncertainty of the future and the dread of vandalisation or destruction of the Armenian cultural heritage in Artsakh dominate the public discussion in Armenia. The fact that there has been no forward-looking work on the protection of cultural heritage in Artsakh in recent decades, and that there is virtually no concept of active and effective cultural property protection in Armenia, makes it all the more difficult to find possible solutions and to cooperate with experienced international organisations. The complicated international legal situation of Karabakh as part of the territory of Azerbaijan hinders any targeted international action, as this can only be taken with the consent of Azerbaijan.

Jasmine Dum Tragut, Assoc. Prof. of Armenian Studies and Linguistics, and hippologist. She directs the University of Salzburg’s Centre for the Study of the Christian East and its Armenian Studies Division, and senior scientist at the Department of Biblical Studies and Church History. She is an honorary doctor of the RA Academy of Sciences and of Yerevan State University. For many years she has been working on various interdisciplinary research projects on Armenian cultural heritage (with field work in Armenia), and since 2022 heads an international project on knowledge transfer in medieval equine (Armenian, Arabic, Georgian and European) manuscripts ‘Meeting in the body of the horse‘. She is consultant and board member of the ecumenical foundation PRO ORIENTE, heads the Austrian Committee for the Protection of Armenian Cultural Heritage in Artsakh and is member of the Blue Shield Austria, and founding member of Blue Shield Armenia. In late 2021 she was co-opted as team-member and scientific advisor at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin’s Office for Artsakh Spiritual-Cultural Heritage Issues. Since Sept. 1, 2023 she heads the laboratory ‘Interdisciplinary Armenian Cultural heritage studies’ as adjunct professor and Principal investigator, which is based at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of RA Academy of Sciences.

“Great Game” in Caucasus: Geopolitics in and around Armenia after Artsakh War

South Caucasus is one of the core sub-regions of the Great Middle East. Political and social-cultural changes in this sub-region effects major geopolitical transformations in the whole region. 

Interests of different geopolitical actors are intertwined with the local reality. In recent years conflict between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey sparked a wider crisis, where all major global players are actively engaged thus creating partnerships that cut across religious, ethnic and geopolitical lines. Even with ethnic cleansing of Artsakh Armenians, Artsakh and Armenia in general continue to be the major factor for the regional developments.

In this presentation I describe the geopolitical standing of major sides in South Caucasus, their main interests and then show the possible developments for Armenia and Artsakh.

Le patrimoine architectural arménien du Haut-Karabagh / Artsakh. Son sort depuis septembre 2023

Depuis l’attaque lancée le 19 septembre 2023 contre l’Artsakh/Haut-Karabagh, suivie de l’exode de toute sa population, le patrimoine architectural, principalement médiéval et arménien, de cette ancienne province orientale de l’Arménie, se trouve sous le contrôle de l’Azerbaïdjan. L’expérience des épreuves subies ces dernières années et les déclarations révisionnistes des dirigeants azerbaïdjanais justifient les plus vives inquiétudes quant au sort de ce patrimoine pluriséculaire.
