Douze études diplomatiques explorent sous de nouveaux angles l’histoire complexe de la diplomatie byzantine. Après une introduction, le volume se tourne vers la période de l'Antiquité tardive et les nouveaux défis auxquels l'Empire romain d'Orient a dû faire face. Il examine ensuite la diplomatie médio-byzantine à travers des chapitres consacrés aux relations avec les Arabes, les Russes et les Bulgares, avant de se concentrer sur divers aspects des contacts officiels avec l’Europe occidentale à la fin du Moyen Âge. Une section thématique étudie les évolutions et les continuités de la diplomatie tout au long de la période, notamment en considérant la vigilance byzantine face aux évolutions politiques extérieures, l'utilisation stratégique des mariages dynastiques et le rôle des femmes en tant qu'acteurs diplomatiques. Twelve studies explore from novel angles the complex history of Byzantine diplomacy. After an Introduction, the volume turns to the period of late antiquity and the new challenges the Eastern Roman Empire had to contend with. It then examines middle-Byzantine diplomacy through chapters looking at relations with Arabs, Rus’ and Bulgarians, before focusing on various aspects of the official contacts with Western Europe at the end of the Middle Ages. A thematic section investigates the changes to and continuities of diplomacy throughout the period, in particular by considering Byzantine alertness to external political developments, strategic use of dynastic marriages, and the role of women as diplomatic actors.
